Here is an example of what to expect when making an appointment to see Kendra for counseling services.
The First Phone Call
When calling to inquire about services or appointments, you will be asked to briefly describe your reason for seeking counseling. Kendra will spend a few minutes introducing herself and talking about how she may be able to help. Arrangements will be made for either a brief in-person interview (free of charge) or an initial intake.
The First Meeting
At your first appointment, you will be asked lots of questions about yourself, your life, your personal history, and more about the reason you are seeking counseling. It is also a good time to talk about goals for counseling and to ask Kendra any questions you may have. At the end of the session, we will talk about how you feel it went, discuss therapeutic goals, and make arrangements for subsequent counseling sessions.
Typical Counseling Session
A typical individual counseling session lasts around 50 minutes and starts with a brief check in to discuss how life is going. The majority of the time will be spent working on issue/s that you want to work on, using a variety of interventions (i.e. discussion, supportive reflection, cognitive challenging, art projects, journaling, mindfulness exercises, skill-building, etc). Before the session ends, we will reflect on the work done during the session, summarizing and noting any big ideas or feelings that came up and make a plan for the next session.
Beyond Counseling Sessions
I am not able to provide 24-7 services. If you need to get a hold of me to cancel, reschedule or ask a quick question, you can reach out to me via phone, text or email during typical business hours (8-5). I will do my best to get back to you in a timely manner. Please be aware that I may not always be available immediately. I run a very part-time private practice. If you are considering more full-time services, please keep this in mind. I am happy to help you find a full-time therapist if this is desired. If you find yourself in a crisis or mental health emergency, please contact 911 or our local crisis line (970-247-5245).
